It seems like all I’m talking about right now is Fire Emblem: Awakening, and well…Apologies, but that might not change any time soon. (At least not until YJ and I both get our acts together, and we can give each other a nice even-tempered look once this long strange trip is over and reflect on the good and bad times.) I finished the game, and I don’t think I’ll be running out of things to observe or extrapolate on any time soon. You folks may see fanfiction being written under my pen name. Be very afraid.

Some light end game spoilers to follow.

I think a mark of a good game is that when I see a commercial or fanwork for it and think “that was a good game! I’m glad I played it!" The mark of a GREAT game is when I see that, and go "That was an AMAZING game! I can’t wait to play it again!" I got a very good experience with Fire Emblem on the first play through, even with all the awkward first time stumbles and mistakes. My second play through, I can already pick out what I want to do differently. Different unit combinations, better leveling habits, utilizing strategy much more effectively, etc.

Granted, there are some things that won’t change. Robin and Chrom are an OTP for me now, plus their children making for a great family unit. Still kind of amazed that the accidental character pairing has such a large claim on my imagination and heart now, but there you go. The story feels really, really strong when they become romantically involved, and there’s just another layer of emotional drama and catharsis on top of everything else. The sequence where Robin makes her decisions, I could easily imagine her motivated out of love as a mother to her children, a comrade to her friends, and an equal half to Chrom. (Is it any wonder she survives with a connection like that? I should think not. Hell, I almost think that with a bond like that, Robin would turn up just a week later because you do not mess with her family or with her. Lest you be critical-ignis-aether combo’d into oblivion.)

I also am not sure if I’ll be tweaking Robin’s appearance much; that spiky pink FF7 Cloud hair has won a place in my heart, and that’s always how I imagine her outside or inside of the game. But I’ll be experimenting with reclassing a lot more; once Chrom and Robin hit Great Lord and Grandmaster status, it just didn’t seem right to switch them to other classes. (Lucina, I didn’t make that same mistake.)

Finally, thanks to her stats and levels and hitting some form of critical every other attack, Lucina just did not give two shits on whatever you set her up against. Walhart? She kills him in a single turn and takes no damage. Grima? Put Brave Sword on Robin to whittle the boss down, and then Lucina attacks (in a nice bit of turnabout from her last confrontation against the boss and conquering her own fears, I like to imagine) and over kills the end game boss. When she and Robin went into the field together, it often seemed like nothing could touch them. Now I really want to respec Robin as a Pegasus Knight and then Dark Flier, get Galeforce, and see how much more she and Lucina can obliterate a map as a mother-daughter team.

This first play through very much felt like a mother-child and husband-wife story with Robin and her family. I’m interested in seeing how that might be tweaked in the next play through as I widen the focus and bring more of the units in. (…While still making sure the family is very OP.)
